Coast guard saves Berrien Springs man from sinking boat

SAINT JOSEPH, Mich. – A Berrien Springs man was rescued from his 34-foot, sinking boat just after 5 p.m. Wednesday about five miles into Lake Michigan from the pier heads in Saint Joseph.

According to Petty Officer Jeff Catanzarite, the man reported a fire in the engine and the boat began taking on water. The man called for help from a marine-band radio.
The Coast Guard pulled the man into a rescue craft with only three-feet remaining above water on the sinking boat.
The man was uninjured and there is no reported pollution from the sunken boat.
