Cold weather shelters need donations

Five agencies have agreed to provide accommodations for the unsheltered homeless during the cold weather this winter.

The Catholic Worker Community/Our Lady of the Road, Center for the Homeless, Life Treatment Centers, Project WARM /Hope Ministries, and the YWCA will provide a warm place to sleep, a light snack and an opportunity to bathe and change clothes.

This is part of the community’s winter Weather Amnesty program that runs from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. November 1 through April 1, 2013.

The agencies are seeking donations of hygiene supplies (travel size); towels and washcloths; blankets, pillows, and sheets; laundry detergent; hats, gloves, and scarves (adult sizes); sanitizing wipes and baby wipes; and coffee, sugar, and snacks (preferably high protein).

The Catholic Worker Our Lady of the Road needs ten twin size mattresses and pest-control mattress covers.

You can take donations to any Weather Amnesty participating location and the items will be distributed between the agencies.

The locations are:
Broadway Christian Parish: 1412 S. Carroll, South Bend (Monday - Thursday 9:00am - 12pm)
Our Lady of the Road:  744 S. Main, South Bend (Friday - Sunday 8:30 - 11am)
