Commissioners release local doctor’s plans for Portage Manor

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. - Dr. Sylvana Atallah, one of two parties who pitched plans to keep Portage Manor up and running, said she wants to rehabilitate the facility in two phases.

Atallah’s plans include making improvements to the building that would generate revenue and allow residents to stay there long term.

She also set up a non-for-profit to support the plans.

Phase one’s work includes adding and renovating bathrooms, reconfiguring rooms to accommodate private beds and fixing up the exterior.

Phase two’s work, which wouldn’t begin until 2025, includes renovating Portage Manor’s attic to include 30 studio apartments.

Dr. Atallah consulted contractors HGR Group to form the plans.

The full report can be seen below.

Both proposals will be reviewed by the St. Joseph County Board of Commissioners, who will then make a recommendation to the St. Joseph County County Council at a public hearing on June 13.
