Construction for the Coal Line Trail set to begin
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Construction for the first phase of the new Coal Line Trail that will span from Lincoln Way West to Riverside Drive is set to begin on Monday.
The new 12-foot-wide trail is being built over the abandoned Notre Dame and Western coal line, currently known as Norfolk Southern.
When completed, this trail will feature trail lighting, benches, a shelter and a bike repair station.
Phase one of this construction is estimated to be completed by the end of 2021.
Lane restrictions will be in place as well as a short-term closure of Woodward Avenue from Angela Boulevard to Elwood Avenue during the construction.
The second phase of the project is scheduled for 2022 and will link phase one construction efforts to the East Bank and State Road 933 trails.
When both phases of construction are completed, the Coal Line Trail will be a 1.5-mile multipurpose path spanning from Lincoln Way West to State Road 933.
