NOW: Cool temps could affect Memorial Day business

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Memorial Day weekend kicks off tomorrow, and many are looking forward to hitting the beach or lounging poolside. But before you grab your swimsuit, you might want to check the forecast and grab a jacket—temperatures are trending cooler than usual.

Highs are expected to stay in the 60s throughout the weekend. While we’ll see plenty of sunshine, it won’t do much to boost temperatures.

Although Memorial Day marks the unofficial start of summer, current forecasts suggest we’ll likely stay in the upper 60s. If we don’t break 69°, this could be the coolest Memorial Day since 2013, when the high only reached 62° with showers.

It might not be perfect weather for swimming or sunbathing, but there are still plenty of ways to enjoy the holiday—like visiting New Buffalo and exploring its local shops and restaurants.

I spoke with Emma Brewster, co-owner of David’s Deli and Coffee in New Buffalo, about what they’re expecting this Memorial Day.

Emma says she still anticipates a good crowd in town, even if fewer people hit the beach due to cooler weather. Her bigger concern is for local farmers, who’ve had a slow start this season due to cooler and drier weather. David’s Deli sources much of its fresh produce locally, and she’s excited for spring and summer vegetables to ripen soon.

Despite the chill, Emma and the rest of the deli staff are eager to welcome customers over the holiday weekend. You can stop by David’s Deli and Coffee in person, follow them on Instagram, or call (269) 469-7177.
