County prepares snow plows for winter weather

SAINT JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- Even though it was a warm and sunny fall day, Saint Joseph County crews were busy getting ready for snow Wednesday at the department’s Riverside Garage prepping the plows.

Workers inspected the entire frame for cracks, replaced hoses and checked the markers.

Each of the big trucks will get two plows when heavy snow falls.

John Stevens, the Riverside Garage supervisor, says the checklist on the 15 trucks is extensive, from the driver’s seat up to the sanders.

A gigantic pile of sand goes in along with just the right amount of salt.

“Last year was a mild year, as we all know. So we are blessed to have a full shed of salt,” said Stevens.

So while Stevens says they'll be blessed if they don't have to worry about a winter wonderland for a couple more week, it won't be doom and gloom when the first flake falls.

The earliest Michiana has ever had snow was September 25, 1942.
