Couple injured in house fire taken to burn unit in Fort Wayne

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Two people were taken to the St. Joseph Regional Burn Center in Ft. Wayne for treatment of their injuries after their home caught fire Tuesday evening.

South Bend Fire responded to the home in the 2200 block of W. Smith Street around 7 p.m. Tuesday night.

One of the occupants of the house was outside and told firefighters his wife was trapped inside the home on the second floor.

Firefighters located the woman, who was unconscious, and brought her out of the home.

Both were taken to Memorial Hospital and transferred to the St. Joseph Regional Burn Center in Ft. Wayne.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
