Crash kills one driver, sends another to hospital

Berrien Springs Police and medical emergency personnel responded to a fatal car crash Monday afternoon 

The crash happened just before 2:00 p.m. Monday on St. Joseph Valley Parkway in Berrien Springs.

Officers responded to a call about a personal injury accident that happened near the M-139 highway.

Police say a Chevrolet Avalanche was heading north and crossed the highway median and crashed into a Ford van traveling in the opposite direction.

Witnesses told police the collision was nearly a head-on accident.

No other passengers were in either vehicle besides the driver.

The driver of the Avalanche sustained unknown injuries and was transported to Lakeland Hospital for treatment.

Police say the driver of the van died in the accident and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Several other agencies responded to the scene including Michigan State Police, Berrien Springs Fire Department, and Medic #1 Ambulance. 

The cause of the crash remains under investigation and the names of both drivers are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
