ELKHART, Ind.- Crews responded to a fire at the intersection of Jefferson and North Third streets in Elkhart Friday evening.
The call came in just before 9 p.m., and crews commanded control of the fire, which was declared no longer active by approximately 10:30 p.m.
Despite its vacancy, the building apparently inhabited homeless individuals, as there were tents inside the building, according to officials.
Assistant Fire Chief, Rodney Dale, reported that at least five people were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and all are expected to be ok.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
