Crews fight garage fire in Elkhart, extinguishment delayed by propane tanks

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- The Elkhart Fire Department reports crews responded to a residence in the 1800 block of N. Bay Road for multiple reports of a structure fire around 7:48 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 9.

The report states upon arrival, crews observed heavy fire and smoke coming from the attached garage.

Firefighters were then met by the residents who confirmed everyone was out of the home.

Officials say initial crews on scene deployed a fire suppression hose line and knocked down most of the fire preventing spread into the main portion of the home.

The report states complete fire extinguishment was delayed due to multiple propane tanks off-gassing due to impending flames.

Officials say once additional crew arrived and the remaining propane fuel burned off, crews were able to safely enter the garage and extinguish the remaining small areas of fire.

The main portion of the home sustained smoke damage, but no significant fire damage.

Utility companies shut off gas and power to the home, and the American Red Cross was notified and assisted the residents.

No civilian or firefighter injuries or deaths have been reported.

The home was boarded and secured, and the fire remains under investigation at this time.
