Crews fight massive fire at lumber company

ST. JOSEPH, Mich. -- Several fire crews spent hours fighting flames in intense cold temperatures Thursday night at a barn owned by Homebuilders Lumber Company in St. Joseph, Michigan.

Crews got the call from a person who saw the flames and smoke from across the lake shortly after 10 p.m.

Firefighters were able to respond quickly because the burning building was located just a few blocks from the station, off Broad Street near downtown St. Joseph.

It took over 25 firefighters from multiple departments, including St. Joseph, Benton Harbor and Benton Township, to extinguish the flames.

Crews say the cold temperatures were reason to take it easy and not over-exert themselves.

No one was found inside of the building.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
