A doctor was killed in the parking lot of the St. Joseph Rehabilitation Institute off Elm Road in Mishawaka Wednesday afternoon. Police said the shooting appeared to be targeted. The body of the suspect was found around 3:30 p.m. [Map]

Late Wednesday, police released the name of the victim - Dr. Todd Graham.

The call came in to St. Joseph County dispatch just before 1 p.m.

"The St. Joseph County Police Department received a call of a shooting at the building behind me, to the right over here, the St. Joseph County Rehab Center. When they arrived, they found a male down on the ground, deceased, it appears to be of gunshot wounds," said CMHU Commander Tim Corbett.

Police said Dr. Graham was walking from one facility to another when the shooting happened. He saw patients in two of the buildings.

There are three buildings in close proximity in the area, two St. Joseph Health System facilities and South Bend Orthopaedics. All of the buildings were placed on lockdown after the shooting.

The lockdowns were lifted later in the afternoon.

Commander Corbett said it was not a workplace shooting and was not an active shooter situation. The initial investigation indicates it was a targeted shooting.

"I think this was a targeted event with a specific victim in mind. That's the way it looks right now preliminarily. If you're a target of someone, if that's the way this ends up being, if it wasn't today, it's going to be tomorrow," Corbett said.

The shooter was described as a white male driving a red Dodge Neon.

"The shooter has left the scene. He is described as a white male in his late forties or early fifties driving a possible Red Dodge Neon that is in poor condition," Corbett said.

Corbett spoke with around 100 patients and employees of all three centers after the shooting on site, and he later interviewed at least 20 witnesses back at Metro Homicide headquarters.

"Between the two buildings, I probably talked to a hundred people. Patients, employees, doctors, nurses, everybody. I think people deserve to hear it from me or one of my people instead of second hand. I think so much gets diluted or not accurate," Corbett said.

The coroner and County Metro Homicide Unit responded to the scene just before around 2 p.m.

The St. Joseph Count Fatal Crash Team (FACT) responded to the scene to assist with diagramming the scene.

Police are checking surveillance cameras and gathering scene evidence while the fatal crash team diagrams the scene.

Around 3:45 p.m., the coroner spoke to reporters and confirmed the victim was someone he knew. He also confirmed the victim was a male.

Dr. Todd Graham's identity was released just before 6 p.m.

CMHU said there had been a confrontation earlier in the day between the two, but did not go into details.

VALLEY TRAIL SCENE

Around 3:30 p.m., multiple police officers responded to the area of Valley Trail near Dragoon Trail.

There, police located the red Dodge Neon police had been searching for.

The suspect, who has not been identified, committed suicide at a friend's property on Valley Trail.

CMHU said the suspect called his friend to let him know he was leaving certain items.

His body was found about 30-yards from his friend's front door.
