Deputies investigating death of 2 month old

BERRIEN COUNTY, Mich. -- Deputies are conducting a death investigation after a 2 month old died one day after being taken to the hospital.

The Berrien County Sheriff's Department was called to a home at 5100 Little Paw Paw Lake Road in Coloma around 9:10 a.m. Monday for a medical call involving a two month old child.

When deputies arrived, they found the incident to be suspicious in nature, reports said.

The child was taken to Watervliet Hospital by ambulance and later transferred to Bronson Hospital in Kalamazoo.

The child died at approximately 5:30 p.m. October 2.

An autopsy was conducted Wednesday at Western Michigan University School of Medicine. The preliminary results of the autopsy were inconclusive.

Additional testing will be conducted.

Deputies said the night the child was taken to the hospital, Scott Skinner was arrested for child abuse and neglect due to the physician's initial reports at the hospital.

Because of the additional testing needed to complete the autopsy, the prosecutor's office did not authorize charges for Skinner and he was released from jail.

The child's death remains under investigation.
