Disability advocates, local leaders gather for town hall
SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- On Tuesday, local leaders and disability advocates gathered for Indiana Statewide Independent Living Council's Disability Town Hall to discuss impact of recent legislative changes on healthcare for individuals with disabilities.
Many community members came out and voiced their concerns and questioned what their options are moving forward.
Local leaders, South Bend Mayor James Mueller and State Representative Maureen Bauer, acknowledged and responded to concerns over the Medicaid cuts.
"This was a great event. It was great to hear from the public again. Not just individuals who are impacted, but also people who work in the field of healthcare. I make it a priority to attend neighborhood meetings, hold coffees. But you know, having something that is specific to one group of individuals, those people in the disability community who often get neglected, it was really important to be here today," said Bauer.
Mueller also underscored the need for inclusive policies that support everyone, regardless of background or ability.
Mueller said, "Well, so you know, it's good to join town halls, join our residents and answer questions and also learn from them about issues that are going to impact them. Of course, the topic tonight are things that are happening at the state level. So not necessarily a thing the mayor controls or the city controls, but it does impact the residents in our city, and it does impact how we need to advocate downstate and beyond."
The town hall aimed to address the unique challenges faced by the disability community and advocate for continued healthcare coverage and support.
