DNR offers safety tips when on frozen water

The Indiana DNR wants to warn people about the potential hazards of being on frozen lakes and rivers this winter.

Conservation officers want everyone to put safety first.

The DNR offered these tips when considering before venturing out onto frozen water.

  • No ice is safe ice.
  • Ice should be at least four inches thick.
  • If you do not know, do not go out onto the ice.
  • Carry ice hooks and rope gear

DNR officers warn that some bodies of water will appear to be frozen solid but can have thin ice is several unsuspecting areas.

They said that it is best to believe that you are always walking on thin ice.
