DOT shuts down 26 bus companies accused of being safety hazards

MISHAWAKA, Ind. -- An investigation by the Department of Transportation into bus companies accused of being a hazard to public safety, has resulted in the shutdown of companies across the country, including one in Mishawaka.

Red Eagle had an office on 12th Street. Officials say the company ran their buses without getting approved by the DOT to operate.

It was just one of 26 to shut down by the feds.

"We’re shutting down bus companies that are operating unethically, unlawfully,” said DOT Secretary Ray LaHood.

The government said the crackdown was necessary.

Since March of last year, 22 people have died and 169 people were hurt while riding on buses that were not up to code.
