Drinking & driving leads to Elkhart County crash

Elkhart County, IN - An Elkhart man was injured after a crash early Saturday morning.

The Elkhart County Sheriff's Office told ABC 57 News that the crash happened at 12: 46 a.m. on State Road 19 and County Road 20.

Wendell Hays, 41, of Elkhart was driving northbound on State Road 19 through the County Road 20 intersection in the left lane.

Deputies report that a semi tractor trailer driven by, Stanford Yarberry Jr., 48, of Smiths Grove, Kentucky, was turning northbound on State Road 19 from east on County Road 20 at the time.

Hays went through the intersection driving through a red light and in front of the semi. The semi hit the back of the left of the cab of Hay's pick-up.

Hays sustained a laceration to his head and was taken to Elkhart General Hospital for medical treatment; Yarberry was not injured.

Several witnesses were on the scene to tell deputies what happened, saying they witnessed Hays blow the red light.

The department is requesting process for operating while intoxicated charges on Hays, meanwhile he was cited for running the red light.
