Driver airlifted to hospital following crash near Michigan City
MICHIGAN CITY, Ind. – On Saturday, a crash involving three vehicles driving eastbound on Interstate 94 resulted in one driver being airlifted to Memorial Hospital via helicopter for treatment of non life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened at 12:15 p.m. near the 44 mile marker on I-94.
This area of the interstate is currently undergoing construction, creating a lane closure.
According to police, a driver in a Toyota Highlander was at a stop in traffic for the backup going into the lane restriction.
A Honda Odyssey driving behind the Toyota was slowing down to a stop.
A Volkswagen Routin then rear-ended the Honda, sending the car into a nearby ditch.
The Volkswagen then rear-ended the Toyota.
All three of the drivers have been identified:
- Justin L. Gibson, driving a blue 2009 VW Routan
- Rebecca A. Karsten, driving a green 1999 Honda Odyssey
- Nicole Cantello, driving a black 2008 Toyota Highlander
Karsten was the driver that was flown to the hospital. The other drivers refused medical treatment.
Gibson, the driver of the Volkswagen, was cited for Driving While Suspended.
This is the second crash in La Porte County on Saturday where an injured individual was airlifted to the hospital.
