Driver arrested after leading police on brief chase

ST JOSEPH COUNTY, Mich. -- A driver was arrested after leading deputies on a brief chase Tuesday afternoon in the area of Lutz and Roys roads, according to the St. Joseph County Sheriff's Department.

Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a Chrysler for speeding on Lutz Road near Roys Road around noon.

Instead of stopping, the driver drove eastbound on Roys Road, onto Decker Avenue near Hull Street, reports said.

Deputies said the vehicle crashed into a mailbox.

The driver ran away from the scene, but was located a short time later walking westbound on Roys Road.

The 48-year-old man from Constantine was taken into custody on preliminary charges of fleeing/eluding police and failure to stop and identify at a property damage accident.
