Driver facing OWI charge in crash that killed 20-year-old woman

VAN BUREN COUNTY, Mich. -- A driver is facing a charge of operating while intoxicated causing death after his passenger died in a crash in Waverly Township on Sunday, according to the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office.

The crash happened on 28th Avenue, west of 44th Street, around 8:30 p.m.

The sheriff's office says the driver, a 21-year-old man from Detroit, was driving on 28th Avenue when the vehicle left the roadway and crashed into a ditch.

His passenger, a 20-year-old woman, was unconscious and bleeding heavily. She was extricated from the vehicle and airlifted to Bronson Medical Hospital.

She later died at the hospital.

Deputies say they believe she was not wearing a seat belt.

The driver was taken into custody on a preliminary charge of operating while intoxicated causing death.

The name of the driver is being withheld pending arraignment.
