Driver leads South Bend police on 'low-speed' chase, crashes into pole

SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- It wasn't exactly a high-speed chase, but a police pursuit caused some excitement near downtown South Bend on Friday.

South Bend Police Officer and Common Council President Derek Dieter tried to pull over a car on Walnut Street.

He said the driver wasn't wearing a seatbelt. But then the man took off.

Police chased him for about two minutes, but the car is so old, it couldn't go very fast.

"Ended up with him crashing into a pole and then taking off running. Then officers and myself were able to capture that person. The passenger got away, but we have the car and the driver with multiple charges on him," said Corp. Derek Dieter.

Police said the driver had cocaine on him, and three outstanding warrants.
