Eight new firefighters sworn-in

Eight new firefighters for South Bend, La Porte and Michigan City were sworn-in Thursday morning during a special meeting of the Board of Public Safety.

The meeting was held at the Luther Taylor Sr. Fire Training Center on Sample Street in South Bend.

South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg and La Porte Mayor Blair Milo were both on hand for the big day.

"I just want to give something back to the community. When I was coming out of college and I started volunteering with some firefighting had some friends get into the career side of it. I thought that would be a neat career for me and I started going after that and I've loved it ever sense. I've found that the South Bend Fire Department is one of the best ones in the area with a lot of opportunities. They are the best equipped and have the best trainers in the area," said valedictorian Andrew Fox.

La Porte County firefighters train in South Bend, so they were all sworn-in together.
