Elkhart Airport gets special visitor

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart Airport had a special visitor Sunday in dedication to a Notre Dame family.

A 1943 North American World War 2 "Mitchell Bomber" plane landed Sunday morning and ABC 57 got a look at the aircraft.

The plane known as "Yankee Warrior" flew in from the Yankee Air Museum in Belleville, Michigan this morning.

The "Yankee Warrior" served in the Mediterranean during April and May of 1944.

This event was a "Memorial Fly-in" to recognize the crew chief of this plane by having it close to Notre Dame.

His granddaughter is is a cadet in the Air Force ROTC at Notre Dame.

"My grandfather was one of the inspirations for me to go into the air force so, to actually be in his plane and experience everything that he experienced when he was in the service is just unbelievable," said Claire Mariani.

"The Yankee Warrior" is one of only two of it's kind still flying today and one of only two with a documented world war two combat history.
