Elkhart breaks ground on new luxury apartment complex

NOW: Elkhart breaks ground on new luxury apartment complex

ELKHART, Ind. -

After more than three years in the works, Elkhart is breaking ground on a $32 million luxury apartment complex on Tuesday called Stonewater at The Riverwalk. According to the mayor, this new complex could bring a big financial boost to the entire city.

The complex will allow people to live right on the river near downtown.

This could help to keep people in the city, dining and shopping locally rather than in a community nearby.

The project will take up 237,337 square feet, including 205 apartments and 6,300 square feet of retail space.

Elkhart mayor Tim Neese hopes the new apartments will help the city’s economy.

“Without adequate housing, the population of our city increases daily and declines in the evening, as employees return to their homes in adjacent communities and spend their hard-earned money dining and shopping elsewhere,” said Neese. “The addition of 205 downtown units in Elkhart will help to capture a portion of that population, resulting in new income, property and sales tax revenue.”

The complex will have studio, one and two bedroom apartments. Each apartment will have marble counter tops, stainless steel appliances, a washer and drying and LED lighting.

Residents will also enjoy 6,800 square feet of amenities. This includes a courtyard with a saltwater pool, grilling station, bar, fire pits, and lounge areas.

Other amenities include a coffee lounge, conference room, pet wash, fireplace lounge, community kitchen, bike storage and repair, gaming and study lounge and 24-hour fitness center.

“We hope that this will be a catalyst for future development projects citywide and will welcome more people to live and invest in the city of Elkhart,” said Neese.

Construction crews hope to be done with the project by the spring of 2019.

Shelley Moore, co-chair of the Elkhart river district implementation team spoke with ABC 57 News on the importance of this project for the city.
