Elkhart business teams up for winter coat drive for CAPS

Right now, a coat drive is underway and so far turn out has been pretty great. Stephenson’s of Elkhart, partnered with ABC57 this year to help keep families in Michiana!

The owner, Danny Reynolds, says they’ve received more than twice the amount of coats this year. They currently have about 70 coats with one day left in the drive.

“The response has been overwhelming over twice the number of coats that we brought in last year for the same event,” said Reynolds.

For 85 years Stephenson’s of Elkhart has always tried to find ways to give back to the community of Elkhart and Michiana in general.

“If this helps keep somebody warm, keep a family warm, and help them get back on their feet then everyone at Stephenson’s is just honored to do so,” added Reynolds.

This year they are taking their donations to CAPS. Reynolds says as long as CAPS wants to continue partnering with them, he will continue sending donations.

Caps is such an important organization in Elkhart County, they do so much good.”

People have brought in numerous coats ranging from brand new to slightly used. Jenna Mansfield stopped by to donate some coats and mittens. She said she’s glad someone is having this kind of drive.

I hope they feel grateful and blessed that others are thinking about them even if I don’t know who they are,” said Mansfield.

Reynolds says each year more and more people become aware and want to help, which is what amazes him most. “The response, the outpouring of generosity from this community never seizes to amaze me.”

Those who donate get 40 percent off a new coat or 30 percent off almost any item in the store, but Jenna Mansfield said that’s nice but helping out means so much more.

Saturday is the last day for this  coat drive! Next week they will head to caps to drop off the items!
