NOW: Elkhart celebrates 175 years of railroads

ELKHART, Ind. -- The National New York Central Railroad Museum celebrated 175 years since the first train arrived in Elkhart.

The ElkhartRail175 anniversary celebration brought visitors from all around the area, some who even had relatives that worked on the same rail line that runs past the museum.

"Rail has affected every family and every person in this country because it built this country from east to west, railroads move people and products," said Dwight Fish, the Elkhart City Council, 4th district.

The date marked exactly 175 years since the first train arrived in Elkhart on October 3, 1851.

The event featured music, food vendors, activities for all ages, and even a ride on the NIBCO Century Flyer, a restored vintage amusement train.

"Trains are captivating for all ages, from children who are holding their ears all the way up to grandfathers and grandmothers." Said Fish.

A formal gala on Oct. 16 will close out the year for the ElkhartRail175 series.
