ELKHART, Ind. -- Proposals aimed at creating a new mixed-use development near the corner of Beardsley Avenue and Greenleaf Boulevard in Elkhart were presented at a special Redevelopment Commission meeting.
Two developers, Anderson Partners Development and Magnus Capital Partner, laid out two separate presentations with plans to bring more affordable housing and new retail spaces to the area.
"If we're going to survive as a vibrant city, we need more people," said Sandi Schreiber, President of the Elkhart City Redevelopment Commission. "If people want to come here and live here, we need to provide them with adequate housing."
Both proposed developments would include more than 100 residential units consisting of townhomes, studios, and one to two-bedroom apartments.
In addition, commercial spaces and a green space have also been outlined in the redevelopment plans.
Developers at Tuesday's meeting look to bring life back to a lot that has sat empty for more than 40 years.
"This is a ten-acre site with a lot of good features and amenities," said President of Anderson Partners Development John Anderson. "There's really potential there for a multiple family mixed-use project that would fit well within the city and the neighborhood."
The commission will meet on August 9 to decide which developer to move forward with.
