Elkhart Community Schools teacher being investigated for misconduct with former student

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. -- ABC57 obtained a letter addressed to parents from Elkhart Community Schools regarding an ongoing criminal investigation into a current teacher for alleged misconduct with a former student.

The letter, forwarded to ABC57 by a concerned parent, notes the district was recently contacted by the Goshen Police Department regarding the potential criminal activity.

District officials go on to state they immediately put the teacher on paid administrative leave for violating our district's policy regarding inappropriate conduct with a student.

The district is currently cooperating with investigators.

District officials also wrote in the letter, "we want to assure the community that if these allegations are true, we will take swift action to address this situation."

Officials noted in Indiana, immorality serves as a legal basis for cancelling a teacher's contract.

School officials are unable to release further information at this time, including the teacher's name, according to the letter sent out Wednesday afternoon.
