ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Community Schools is one 42 recipients of the U.S. Department of Education $9.5 million Full-Service Community Schools Grant.
That grant will be given out over the course of 5 years, with schools receiving around $1.9 million per year.
It will go towards the more than 11,000 students in Elkhart’s district, as well as kids at 2 schools from Concord Community Schools.
This comes as the Department of Education says it received the largest number of applications in the grant’s history this year.
The funding will help aid in areas of need like financial literacy and nutrition, but it doesn't stop there. Elkhart Community Schools Superintendent, Steve Thalheimer, says the money will also allow for new resources and partnerships with the community.
And in a major part of the process – an on-site coordinator will oversee the impacts of the grant, and keep it on the right track.
