Elkhart County dedicating historical marker honoring Emma Molloy

ELKHART, Ind. -- The Elkhart County Historical Society and Elkhart Public Library are in collaboration with the Indiana Historical Bureau to dedicate a new historical marker for Emma Barrett Molloy on Wednesday, Sept. 4.

The Elkhart Public Library states that Molloy became the first female newspaper editor locally when she started the Elkhart Observer in 1872. She became a prolific political reformer and public speaker, advancing temperance and women’s liberation. Molloy advocated for women’s suffrage and her speeches took her to an international stage. She lectured in England and spoke at National Woman Suffrage Association at National Woman Suffrage Association conventions.

Starting at 11 a.m. the downtown Elkhart Public Library will have representatives from Elkhart County Historical Museum and the Indiana Historical Bureau honoring Molloy along the High Street in front of the library, sharing more about Molloy and her work.
