Elkhart County Homicide Unit investigating child abuse case

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Elkhart County Homicide Unit is investigating a child abuse case involving a four-year-old child.

In the early morning hours of June 10, 2021, emergency responders were called to Elkhart General Hospital for reports of a four-year-old that had been abused and was unresponsive.

The child’s mother and family friend told law enforcement what they knew about the incident.

Information gathered by law enforcement while at the hospital led officers to an apartment in the 2800 block of Toledo Road, where 19-year-old Christian Maradiaga of Elkhart was located and taken into custody, reports said.

Probable cause was found to support the arrest and a $300,000 bond was set pending the filing of formal charges and further review.

This is an ongoing investigation.

The child’s prognosis at this time is not optimistic, reports said.
