Elkhart County creates rent and utilities assistance program for residents

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – The Elkhart County government has introduced an assistance program designed to help families facing financial hardship due to COVID-19 stay in their homes.

This program provides funding for eligible households who are behind in internet service, utilities, and rent payments.

To qualify as an “eligible household” a renter household must include one or more individuals who meet the following criteria:

  • Qualifies for unemployment or has experienced a reduced household income, has acquired significant costs, or has experienced financial troubles because of the pandemic
  • Shows a risk of experiencing homelessness or housing instability
  • Has a household income at or below 80% of the area median

The program will provide financial assistance for 12 months and can cover past bills up to six months prior to receiving funding. This means that an individual with two months of past due bills will receive assistance for those two bills plus 10 months moving forward.
