Elkhart firefighters ask residents to double check, consider address signs
Many Elkhart homes lack clearly posted address signs and some don’t have them at all. The Elkhart Fire Department is stressing the importance of having your address posted where they can see it because every second counts in the case of an emergency.
“It’s very important that we’re able to visibly see the address from the road,” said Steve Kamp, Assistant Chief of the Elkhart Fire Department.
It’s National Fire Prevention Month, so Elkhart firefighters are crossing off all the necessary steps to make sure they can get to you as quickly as possible.
“There’s been several instances where we have responded where we were unable to identify an address because there was nothing visible that could be seen,” said Kamp.
But they need your help too.
“A lot of times they’re either older or they fall off, sometimes mailboxes may not have them on there,” said Kamp.
They’re asking you to double check and make sure the address is clear.
“Size – just something appropriate that we can see from the road,” said Kamp.
And if it’s something you still have to cross off your list…
“You can get addresses made at any of your local hardware stores – Lowes, Menards, Home Depot. You probably either go online too and order something through online,” said Kamp.
You can order address plaques by searching online. Here are a few links to get you started:
