Elkhart General Hospital and Beacon Health donate equipment to hospital in Ghana
ELKHART, Ind. – A representative from Ghana joined local health care officials at Elkhart General Hospital on Friday to celebrate and thank them for donating medical equipment to Ankaase Methodist Regional Hospital.
A letter from the CEO of Ankaase Hospital personally thanking health care officials in Elkhart was delivered to them. They also provided certificates showing their appreciation as well as photos highlighting years of planning and trips in relation to those donations.
In 2018, physical therapist Randy Brooks traveled to Ghana, and upon his return to Indiana, he and Beacon Health loaded up a 40-foot shipping container full of hospital beds, furniture and other supplies to be sent to Ankaase Hospital.
Emmanuel Otsin, a nurse for Ankaase Hospital, says that Ghana’s relationship with Elkhart General Hospital and Beacon Health has had an important impact on how they provide health care.
“We send over teams to share their knowledge but we also collaborate with other health care people on how to run the hospital better and to improve the process,” Otsin said. “We have been able to do that and I mean the greatest impact for any health system is to reduce morbidity and mortality and to will good health outcomes and we were able to do that through this relationship.”
The South Bend Clinic and Beacon Health Systems have been collecting medical supplies since 2017, and the equipment they have distributed includes 8 hospital beds, over 300 sanitation kits, portable x-ray readers and a mammography machine.
Champion Seating also played a crucial role in shipping the supplies.
