ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. --  More than half of the 86 animals brought into the Elkhart County Humane Society on Monday came from an unexpected hoarding situation leaving the shelter in a tough spot.

The shelter is already full this time of year with kitten season in full swing, and stray animals arriving day in and day out. Now, they’re waiving adoption fees and asking the community to open their homes, and hearts to help clear some room.

Many of the animals rescued from Monday’s intake are currently staying with foster families, but the shelter says they’re still in urgent need of help.

For those who can’t adopt, there are still other ways to make a difference. The shelter is encouraging people to donate, foster, and most importantly, spay and neuter their pets to help prevent situations like this in the future.

"Our staff was here pretty late last night, but it was a lot when we were already full," said Maria Waltersdorf, Community Development Manager at the Elkhart County Humane Society.

"So now we’re a little screamy, a little nervous with how full we are that’s why we decided to waive those fees."

The shelter says adoption fees will be waived through Saturday, and anyone interested is encouraged to stop by and meet the animals currently looking for homes.
