Elkhart Parks channels sweet side with free maple syrup workshop

ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. – Maple syrup harvesting season begins in March, and Elkhart County Parks is honoring this Indiana tradition by hosting a free maple syrup workshop next weekend at Bonneyville Mill County Park.

Participants can learn how to make their own syrup with the help of Elkhart County Park naturalists. Guests will learn everything from picking the right tree to boiling or “sugarin’” the sap.

“Maple-tapping is a deep-rooted tradition in Indiana, and it may surprise some people at how easy a hobby it is to start,” said Courtney Franke, the program naturalist. “Just a few dollars’ worth of equipment and a single maple tree are all that’s needed to make delicious maple syrup right from home.”

The Parks’ Maple Syrup Workshop will take place on March 6 from 9:30 – 10:30 a.m. at the Baldwin One-Room Schoolhouse in the County Park.

Anyone age 13 and up can attend, and participants are required to register here before Friday, March 5.

To adhere to COVID-19 safety guidelines, attendees are required to wear a mask and practice social distancing during the program.

Bonneyville Mill County Park is located at 53373 C. R. 131 in Bristol.
