Elkhart Police catch carjacking suspect after car catches fire

ELKHART, Ind. - Police say they caught a carjacking suspect after his car caught fire on Saturday morning. Police were responding to an alleged carjacking of a black Jeep Grand Cherokee in the 29900 block of New Castle Drive. 

On the way to the scene an officer say the car, and while turning around the man took off.

He led police on a short pursuit before crashing the Grand Cherokee into Co Rd 108 and Co Rd 1 around 1:05 a.m. Saturday morning. 

The car caught fire and three police officers had to remove him from the car. 

The man was taken to the hospital and is in serious condition. 

The officers were treated for smoke inhalation at the hospital and released. 

One of the officers also injured their hand.
