Elkhart Police investigating shots fired, vehicle crash

ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Police are investigating a hit and run crash involving a stolen vehicle and reports of gunshots that happened on Cleveland Avenue Tuesday evening.

Police were called to the 300 block of Cleveland Avenue just before 7 p.m. Tuesday for reports of a vehicle crash.

While at the scene, officers were informed gunshots were heard in the area.

A man told police he heard gunfire, then a vehicle crash. He said he went outside and saw his 20007 Kia had been crashed into.

Witnesses told police they saw two vehicles driving in the area shooting at each other.

One of the vehicles, a 2010 Nissan, then struck a parked vehicle.

The occupants of the Nissan got out of the vehicle and ran from the scene.

When officers spoke with the owner of the Nissan, the owner said it had been stolen.

Officers collected two handguns and casings from the scene.

The suspects were described as black males, according to police.
