ELKHART, Ind. -- Elkhart Police are investigating an attack that happened in the parking lot of the Walmart on County Road 6 Tuesday morning.

Police responded to the scene around 8:30 a.m. for reports of a knife attack.

Reports say the suspect went into the store, took a machete and concealed it in his backpack.

He left the store and called an employee over to him while in the parking lot, and when the employee approached the suspect, the man attacked the employee with the machete, reports said.

After the attack, the suspect fled the store on a bicycle and headed southbound on Cassopolis Street.

Elkhart Police, the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office and the K9 Unit searched for the suspect.

“I stood at my house waiting to see if anyone came out of the woods. He did, headed due east in between the houses. As he did that the officers were all able to find him," a witness told ABC57.

The suspect was located at 9:28 a.m. west of Cassopolis Street near North Drive and taken into custody.

The 30-year old employee suffered non-life threatening injuries.
