ELKHART, Ind. -- Friday afternoon, local Senators and Representatives gathered at the Greater Elkhart Chamber of Commerce to discuss bills they are in support of and also hear the community's concerns.
The issue with the most concern being the rising NIPSCO costs.
"Senate Bill 272, was a bill that Senator Stacey Donato and I introduced, unfortunately, due to the short session, there was not time to hear it in utilities committee." Said Senator Blake Doriot. "But what the bill does is it will allow a customer to purchase their generated electricity from another generating source. Now this is done in Michigan. There are about 5000 customers that do this, and it is generating some savings, not huge savings, but every one of those 5000 that's been allowed to get on it does not want to get off. So, it will save money, but you will still have to pay the delivery rate to the existing utility, be it NIPSCO or I&M."
