Elkhart woman charged with March 22 murder of her husband

ELKHART, Ind. -- A 70-year-old Elkhart woman has been arrested and charged for the murder of her husband late last week in the 70000 block of County Road 9.

The alleged murder took place on March 22, one day after the suspect, Linda Tener, was said to have been released from the hospital after treatment for mental health issues, according to her son.

Authorities say the Elkhart County Sheriff's Office received a call around 4:50 a.m. last Friday in reference to Tener pointing a gun while on the porch of a nearby home.

" [The homeowner] was able to wrestle the firearm away from Linda and pinned her down," the ECSO said. "Linda repeatedly [said] that she hurt Dad, Dad's gone and your Dad is dead, I shot him."

A short while later, officers from the Nappanee Police Department arrived and took Tener into custody before locating a pink revolver lying on the ground near where she was pinned down.

Tener and her husband, Johnnie Tener, lived in the same block as the home she was arrested at.  Once Linda was in custody, officers proceeded to her home where they found Johnnie Tener dead in a recliner with what appeared to be one gunshot wound to his head.

Tener was arrested on the charge of murder and transported to the Elkhart County Jail.
