SOUTH BEND, Ind - The City of South Bend projects there will be a need for at least 700 EV charging stations over the next six years, to keep up with growing demand.
The city wants everyone to have easy access to plug in and charge up.
The city is working on the final steps of the EV infrastructure plan which will help prepare for the anticipated increase in electric vehicles.
As of now, the city of south bend operates 7 charging stations, and the EV plan is working towards supporting the workforce to maintain those charging stations and add more of them.
The city plans to operate 39 charging stations by 2030.
Director of Sustainability, Alex Bazan, says the goal is to install the charging stations equitably.
“Are they near employers? Are they near where there is multifamily homes? Where there is a lot of residents? Where the garage could have the EV charging station? Supporting multifamily homes so they have access to charging stations? There's also making sure those EV charging stations are especially locations that are in historically disadvantaged communities," said Bazan.
The city is collecting feedback on its EV infrastructure plan through November 1.
