NOW: Experts share tips on how to prevent Melanoma as summer approaches

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind., --- May is skin cancer awareness month, and experts are reminding folks to protect themselves from the sun’s harmful rays to prevent Melanoma as we head into the summer.

“Melanoma varies in terms of like how aggressive it can be. So, if caught early, it can be, you know, removed from the skin, and it doesn't have any long-term consequences,” said Dr. Shilpi Khetarpa, a dermatologist with the Cleveland Clinic.

Experts say Melanoma is the deadliest form of cancer but has a 99% cure rate if caught early.

Dr. Khetarpa says the best way to do catch it early is getting moles or other spots on your skin checked if you notice they are asymmetrical, have an irregular border or uneven color.

A spot bigger than a pencil eraser or changing in some way should also be investigated.

The sun causes nearly 90% of melanomas, so the best thing to do is seek shade, but when you must hit the sun, here’s how you can protect yourself:

"Slip, Slop, Slap, and Wrap,” The American Cancer Society says this fun catch phrase can protect you from the sun’s harmful rays.

The chance of increasing melanoma goes up with age, but it still impacts young people and all skin types.

" It's important to reapply every two hours if you are going to be outside. Or if you get wet, making sure you use like a water-resistant sunscreen. They also make UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) clothing, so if you're someone that doesn't want to lather up in lots of sunscreen, there's an ultraviolet protective factor in certain clothing you can buy,” added Dr. Khetarpal

It’s crucial to get regular skin checks--- especially if you have a personal or family history of skin cancer.
