FACT investigating fatal crash on US 31 bypass

ST. JOSEPH COUNTY, Ind. -- The Fatal Crash Team is investigating a fatal crash that happened just before noon on Tuesday on the US 31 bypass involving two vehicles and a semi.

The crash happened when a semi changed lanes and struck a pickup truck, which then struck a car, reports said.

Reports say the semi was traveling northbound when it moved from the right hand lane to the left hand lane and struck the right rear of an F150 pickup truck.

The semi spun in the right lane and struck a Mazda Miata. The Miata and pickup traveled off the roadway and the pickup struck a tree.

The driver of the pickup truck was transported to the hospital.

His front seat passenger, 26-year-old Brandon Perez, was pronounced dead at the scene.

A 3-year-old passenger in the back seat was injured and transported to the hospital.

The driver of the Mazda was also taken to the hospital following the crash.

The semi driver was not injured.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing.
