Fair housing workshop at the St. Joseph County Public Library
City of South Bend - Municipal Government SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- Wednesday afternoon, the South Bend Human Rights Commission held their 2026 Fair Housing Workshop: Fair Housing and Housing Scams at the St. Joseph County Public Library Community Learning Center.
The workshop was held from 10 a.m. to noon and focused on educating the public on the history of the housing market in South Bend, discrimination in the housing market, and the different types of housing scams plus how to avoid them.
The South Bend Human Rights Commission Executive Director, Katrina Lee, told ABC57, "We've seen numerous cases of housing discrimination, and for the most part, that stems from lack of education, just not knowing what the laws are, not knowing what your rights are as a tenant, as a renter, as a property manager, as an owner."
"So, while our numbers may not be as high as we want it today, our hope is that they learned something so incredibly valuable that they're like you will not believe what I just learned today." Said instructor Leigh Holland. "This is and they have handouts so that information now can be shared, make copies, put online, and so that is really the essence, in my opinion, of educating and informing the public. And hopefully that's what they are walking away with."
