Family asking for information on Thursday's fatal hit and run crash
SOUTH BEND, Ind. --- The family of a man killed in a hit and run crash in South Bend is asking for the public to call in with information.
Police said Ishayaa Diya, 61, was on his bicycle heading west on Brick Road, when he was struck from behind at 6:51 a.m. Investigators with the Fatal Alcohol Crash Team (FACT) said the suspect car is a silver four door car.
“He used to ride his bike any and everywhere,” said Diya’s niece, Tanisha Breveare.
Breveare said Diya relied on his bike to get him everywhere in the city. She said her uncle will be missed.
“My uncle was someone that I could depend on,” Breveare said. “My father died when I was young, so I can always count on him.”
She said she wants her family to have justice.
“If you make an accident and hit somebody, just stay there,” she said. “Deal with the consequences because you just don’t know what the family is going through and what they’re already going through.”
St. Joseph County Police Department said there are no bike lanes on Brick Rd. ABC 57 News requested the number of crashes on the road, and police said the number is not any more or less than many other roads in the county.
Diya leaves behind a wife of more than 30 years, his sister, two nieces, and the rest of his family. Breveare said they need the community’s help in finding whoever hit her uncle.
“We all loved him so much and I just want the person that did this to just come forward,” she said. “This is what we need, we can’t have all of this going on, we just need some justice just please help us.”
If you have any information on the suspect or vehicle in question call 911.
