Family, friends honor memory of Indiana teen drowned in Lake Michigan

NEW BUFFALO, Mich. -- The family and friends of an Indiana teen who drowned in Lake Michigan are promoting water safety.

They plan to attend a surf rescue class Sunday morning at 9:30 at Lions Pavillion Park in New Buffalo.

Last month, 15-year-old Cory McFry drowned near Indiana Dunes.

Officials believe he either stepped off a sandbar or was swept away by rip currents.

According to the Great Lakes Rescue Project, there have been 35 drownings this year in Lake Michigan.
