Family of man injured in officer-involved shooting strained by tragedy

PLYMOUTH, Ind. -- According to Dale Dodson, uncle of 33-year old Lane Dodson, the man injured during a officer-involved shooting Monday night in the Big Kmart parking lot in Plymouth, his nephew was shot in the neck, shoulder, and hand.

Dodson's expected to be transferred to a hospital in Indianapolis to undergo a difficult surgery.

"He's got four boys he takes care of and he goes to work every day,” said Dale Dodson. “What happened is out of his character."

Police say 2 officers stopped Lane Dodson, 1 with Indiana State Police and the other with Plymouth's PD, when the incident occurred.

“Sometime, while speaking with the individual, there was a confrontation,” said Sgt. Trent Smith with ISP's Bremen post. “What we know at this point is there was a gun on the individual, he did raise it towards officers and that's when the officers opened fire on the individual."

Police say the shooting stemmed from a violent domestic dispute Lane Dodson was arrested for just days before.

"It's just hard to believe that happened,” said Dale Dodson. “If there was a gun involved and raised then they had a right to do what they did, but it's out of his character for something like that to happen."

Dodson's uncle is also a former sheriff's deputy, one who admits he'd think twice before taking the oath today.

"I used to be an officer myself years ago and I wouldn't want to be a deputy or sheriff today with the way things are," said Dale Dodson.

Police are expected to release the names of the two officers involved in the shooting Wednesday afternoon.
