Family pet dies in Elkhart house fire

ELKHART, Ind. - A family pet was killed in a house fire on Park Avenue Saturday night, according to the Elkhart Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the incident at 6:30 p.m., where they discovered heavy fire and smoke coming on the first floor of the two-story home.

Only one person was in the house at the time and got out safely, fire crews reported. The family dog, however, died from smoke inhalation in its cage.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
