NOW: Family remembers man found dead in southeast South Bend

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Feelings of disbelief, shock, and sadness were felt outside of a home in South Bend among the family and friends of Trey Martinez, 27.

According to St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit, Martinez was found dead in the street near Marine and Indiana Avenue just after 7:30 a.m. On Sunday, investigators spent more than 12 hours interviewing witnesses, collecting evidence and focusing on one home that was a block away from where Martinez’s body was found.

“For somebody to take his life so tragically and vulgar it just like it hurts,” said Jose Martinez, the victim’s cousin.

On Sunday, the family spoke with ABC 57 News and said they could not believe Martinez was dead. Investigators claimed Martinez’s injuries were suspicious but did not confirm how he died.

“We just trying to put everything together,” said Alex Arendt, SJCMHU Asst. Commander.

“We want answers,” said Laura Baker, the victim’s cousin. “On why Trey’s not the type of person that you would think that something like that would happen.”

Martinez did not have any enemies, according to his family. They said he worked at a nearby RV company, took classes at Ivy Tech Community College and looked after his four-year-old son.

“It’s going to be hard for that little guy,” said Martinez. “Because he’s smart, his son is very smart.”

Martinez’s autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning to determine the cause of death. Investigators said Sunday that they’re following up on leads.

Martinez said he forgives whoever killed his cousin, but said he is asking this person to help give his family closure.

“Just get it over with just turn yourself in,” said Martinez.

There will be a vigil on Monday, September 30 at 5:30 p.m. for Martinez, where his body was found near Indiana and Marine Street.
